CLASS: CHARACTERISTICS (SHAMA’IL) OF THE MESSENGER OF GOD (PBUH)
Citing the many Qur’anic verses that indicate the importance of each Muslim recognizing what made the Messenger of God (PBUH) the best of creation, a great many scholars of our Islamic tradition have considered studying the Prophetic characteristics obligatory. Certainly, belief in the last Prophet is an integral element of faith and learning about the distinguishing traits and characteristics of the Prophet (PBUH) is an essential way to transform a mere affirmation of the tongue into a firm belief penetrating the heart. Hence, enabling one to comprehend Imam Busiri’s words in his famous Burda, “He is a human being but not like other human beings, the way a ruby is a stone but not like other stones.” Furthermore, the Qur’an also invokes believers to fulfill two important commands regarding the Messenger of God. The first is to love both God and His Messenger and the second is to emulate his example. Studying the distinguishing traits and characteristics of the Prophet (PBUH) are keys to acheiving both. To know him is to love him and to love him is to follow him.
The Nur Foundation for Sacred Sciences will be hosting a gathering in which knowledge and worship will be combined through devoting a session to sending prayers upon the Prophet followed by a reading of the celebrated book on the Prophetic characteristics, “Our Master Muhammad the Messenger of God: His Sublime Character and Exalted Attributes” by the late Imam Abdallah Sirajuddin. The book is available for purchase online.
Classes are held every Monday at 7:30 in Willowbrook and Burr Ridge, IL. For further details about classes contact us at info@nursacredsciences.org.
CLASS: THE FIQH OF WORSHIP (HANAFI)
Obligations within the Islamic tradition are generally divided into two categories; namely those which are individual obligations (fard ‘ayn) and those which are communal ones (fard kifaya). While communal obligations are those which if fulfilled by one individual in the community, then the rest of the community becomes relieved of them. Individual obligations are those which remain incumbent upon every mature Muslim man and woman, and cannot be fulfilled by another. One such individual obligation is to learn the essentials of worship to ensure that one’s ablutions, prayers, fasts, etc. are valid and acceptable to God. The Nur Foundation for Sacred Sciences will be offering a course in the Fiqh of Worship according to the Hanafi school of law. The course will focus on aspects of ritual purity, prayer, and fasting. We hope that this will be a learning opportunity for both those who have already studied fiqh and wish to reinforce what they have already learned as well as those who will be studying this material for the first time.
The recommended text for the course is Ascent to Felicity (Maraqi al-Sa’adat) translated by Faraz Khan.
Classes are held every Wednesday at 7:30 in Naperville, IL. For further details about classes contact info@nursacredsciences.org .
