CHARACTERISTICS (SHAMA’IL) OF THE MESSENGER OF GOD (PBUH)

Citing the many Qur’anic verses that indicate the importance of each Muslim recognizing what made the Messenger of God (PBUH) the best of creation, a great many scholars of our Islamic tradition have considered studying the Prophetic characteristics obligatory.  Certainly, belief in the last Prophet is an integral element of faith and learning about the distinguishing traits and characteristics of the Prophet (PBUH) is an essential way to transform a mere affirmation of the tongue into a firm belief penetrating the heart. Hence, enabling one to comprehend Imam Busiri’s words in his famous Burda, “He is a human being but not like other human beings, the way a ruby is a stone but not like other stones.”  Furthermore, the Qur’an also invokes believers to fulfill two important commands regarding the Messenger of God.  The first is to love both God and His Messenger and the second is to emulate his example.  Studying the distinguishing traits and characteristics of the Prophet (PBUH) are keys to acheiving both.  To know him is to love him and to love him is to follow him.

The Nur Foundation for Sacred Sciences will be hosting a gathering in which knowledge and worship will be combined through devoting a session to sending prayers upon the Prophet followed by a reading of the celebrated book on the Prophetic characteristics, “Our Master Muhammad the Messenger of God: His Sublime Character and Exalted Attributes” by the late Imam Abdallah Sirajuddin.  The book is available for purchase online.
